The years between 1861 and 1865 brought a
profound change in many ways for the United States of America. The way the Civil War was
fought changed the lives of millions of people, both North and South.
By expert estimates there were between 618,000 and
700,000 casualties in the Civil War. If these estimates are correct, they would
exceed the loss incurred by the United States in all it's other wars, from the
Revolution through the Korean Conflict. The casualties from disease outnumbered
those from battle wounds.
