This granite memorial is 352 feet high, and commemorates the decisive naval battle of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry over the British at The Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. It is now known as the Perry Victory and International Peace Memorial. The bodies of six American and British Officers who died during the battle are buried at the base of the monument. Originally buried in what is now a park on the island, they were moved to their present location when work on the monument was begun n 1913. The British Officers were; Captain Robert Finnis, Lieutenant James Garden, and Lieutenant John Garland. The American Officers were; Lieutenant John Brooks, Midshipman, Henry Laub, and John Clarke. This memorial column is Roman Doric in design, and one of the tallest
structures of this design in the world. At the top of the monument is an open promenade
that is reached by elevator, offering a spectacular view of the harbor, the Ohio mainland,
Michigan, Canada, and various other Lake Erie Islands.
